The Infestation
(Based on the dream I had last night, so I figured I’d just roll with it.)
Harry opened the curtains to gaze upon the city painted in moonlight. The lights burned as bright as they always did, and there were no shortage of sirens and car horns, but he knew something was different.
It had been happening for the last hour or so, everytime he would lose himself in the papers on his desk, he would hear a moan; a low, guttural sound.
“Honey?” his wife said as she opened the door to his study, “You might want to look at the news.”
Harry shook his head, “Is it zombies?”
His wife raised an eyebrow, “How did you come to that conclusion?”
“Well, after all the disasters this city has had since… you know who died, zombies were pretty much inevitable.”
“Well, you’re right,” she crossed her arms and gave him a look that made Harry feel somewhat uncomfortable, like when his mother used to give him that look, “This city has gone through a lot, you should really find someone to replace him.”
“No. We were too dependent on him. We can survive, our city lived before him, and will live after him. I’ll address the people in the morning.”
———-
“People of Metropolis,” the mayor began, “I know you are all frightened by the zombie epidemic, but if we can overcome giant spiders and crazed ninjas, then we can overcome this.”
The screen behind him showed some footage of a shambling undead, “See how they stumble around? They’re not exactly speedy, nor intelligent. They can’t use weapons, or even chase after you. You can shoot it in the head, or even hit it with a baseball bat, these aren’t exactly juggernauts, people. The only power they have is fear, and if you fear them, stay inside and board up your windows. Metropolis’ finest will clean up the city of this infestation shortly, all we have to do is not panic and not allow ourselves to be caught by these laughably clumsy monsters.”
The people cheered their mayor, resolute in the belief that they would be all right.

Harry once again stood staring out his window. There was no moonlight tonight, but that didn’t matter. The screams of the panicked populace echoed throughout the city, and the gunshots began to dwindle against the chorus of moans.
“Damn it all…” Harry groaned, “I miss Superman.”
