I used to think the military used boot camp to train obedient, mindless killers. I realize now that's wrong -- the military wants smart, efficient killers who can use the equipment and survive his surroundings to return the greatest number of successful missions for the dollar.

It's really companies like Wal-Mart that want the obedient and mindless. Every level of management upward needs a little extra brain-power, but they only want enough to get the job done. If anybody at Wal-Mart actually started thinking, they might unionize (not that unions are always the right answer, but it's the only one Wal-Mart employees might actually succeed in... giving their mindlessness to a separate organization..) If they were smart, they might ask for raises.. or wonder about the 43% annual turnover rate at the Hobart store..

... Or get insulted when a manager implies he doesn't trust you.
