Really, you were probably incredibly fortunate to have not arrived when they were still there… Options one and two are far too common for anybody short of a Marine, and even then you’d still have to worry about a gun.

I’ll give you the easy answer: nothing in their cars is worth risking your life over — the correct action would have been to put it in reverse, get the hell out of there, and call 911 on your cellphone.
